Students with disability

Education Queensland acknowledges that some students with disability, due to their significant educational needs, may require additional support and access to specialised programs and services above and beyond those support provisions already in schools. These students may meet eligibility criteria for additional resourcing through Education Queensland’s Education Adjustment Program (EAP). These additional resources assist classroom and specialist staff to deliver high quality educational programs that are designed to meet the individual program needs within an inclusive school setting.

A Special Education Program (SEP) reflects the additional support, resourcing and programs that students with disability may require and offers support to students diagnosed in the following disability areas:

  • intellectual disability
  • autism spectrum disorder
  • physical impairment
  • vision impairment
  • hearing impairment
  • speech language impairment


At Morningside State School, we offer an inclusive model of service provision for students with disability. As such, students are in regular classes with their peers. The support model is individualised to each student and may consist of a combination of support options including teacher/teacher aide support in the regular classroom, individual one-on-one support or small group support across the school day. Morningside State School has a number of flexible learning spaces which are utilised for individual or small group instruction. Special education program teachers and teacher aides work collaboratively with general classroom teachers to develop and implement educational programs for students in order to best meet their learning needs.

Key to our inclusive education model at Morningside State School is a team approach for students with special needs helping to ensure successful participation in learning with their peers. As such each student and their family becomes a valued member of the whole school community. Students with a hearing impairment, physical impairment and/or vision impairment have access to the services of an advisory visiting teacher in their relevant disability area. Advisory visiting teachers assist teachers with the curriculum adjustments and delivery of educational programs that target a student’s learning goals. Other visiting support professionals are also available to support students with disabilities. These include guidance officers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language pathologists who may help to assess a student’s educational needs and assist teachers in developing programs.
